Women in Exile attended the Tribunal Permanent Dels Pobles which took place in Barcelona from 29-30.06,18 and presented the case of the one Euro (1€) job offered to refugee. The idea was taken from our nr. 10 newsletter article, on the topic.
The 1€ job is very common in the German refugee camps (“Lagers”) and is sued to justify that refugees are not idle. The job is only available for 80 hours a month and one can only earn 80€ per month.
Permanent Peoples Tribunal competence, “as declared in its Statute, extends to serious and systematic violations of the rights of peoples, whether committed by States, by authorities other than States, or by private groups or organizations. The Tribunal is competent to give judgements on any international crime, specifically on crimes against peace and humanity, genocide, any infringement of the fundamental rights of peoples and minorities, grave and systematic violations of the rights and freedoms of individuals.”
In Europe, migrant and refugees have lived through the various stages of the building of Fortress Europe. They have seen Europe’s policy of exclusion being constructed year after year – a policy that has resulted in a sweeping rollback of people’s human rights; the encampments, forcible detention and deportation; and criminalisation at the militarised southern and eastern borders of Europe. Inspired by solidarity between migrants, refugees and other social movements towards equality and inclusive society, since 2017 a large number of migrants organizations and civil society networks active in the defence of human rights in Europe, called on the Permanent Peoples Tribunal (PPT), with the aim to give clear visibility to the migrant and refugee peoples from all backgrounds as subjects of fundamental human rights; to identify and judge the chain of co-responsibility in the violation of those rights experienced throughout the whole migratory journey and to urgently identify and promote appropriate mechanisms for access to justice.
We join the refugee living in Wünsdorf, refugee initiatives and all those working with refugee issues to say “loud and clear” that UN charters should not only be decorative words, but agreement to be respected and put in practice.
Most of the refugees in the Wünsdorf camp, which is an extension of BAMF, first receiving centre Eissenhüttenstadt are living in this camp for more than one year. This is in the contraversion of the law, which state that refugees should not live in these centres for more than six months. Children have no possibility of going to school or kindergarten, so they are living in the camp with no perspective just like the adults.
“June 20 is the day the world commemorates the strength, courage, and perseverance of millions of refugees. Held every year, World Refugee Day also marks a key moment for the public to show support for families forced to flee. In September 2016, global leaders agreed to work towards a Global Compact for refugees in 2018 where all parts of society stand together and do their fair share” (#WithRefugees).
Together with Flüchtlingsrat Brandenburg (refugee counsel brandenburg) and Antidiskriminierungsberatung Brandenburg der Opferperspektive (councelling for anti-discrimination) we support the attached open letterfrom the women who are accomodated in Stolpe-Süd/ Hennigsdorf applying their demands to the responsible persons in
the ministery for work, social, health, women and family of Brandenburg the city of Henningsdorf the district (Landkreis) Oberhavel the ministery for education, youth and sports Brandenburg the housing agents in Henningsdorf
Today, Women in Exile and Friends, together with 100 other groups and initiatives are on the streets, on the water, and everywhere to protest against the AfD and their racist propaganda and hatred against refugees.
We as asylum seeking women arrive and think we are safe to start a new life in this country. But the reality of being accommodated in isolated camps, lack of perspectives and racist hostility from right-wing parties such as Afd policies determine our living conditions.
We live in constant anxiety for deportation to our countries of origin, the countries we passed through and with fear of being deported within the EU member states. We struggle every day with the fear of racists and physical assaults in the streets, because of our skin colour, religion, origin and/or gender. Every Day all of us have to struggle with all these kinds of fear and anxiety.
Recently AfD has started pretending to be fighting for women rights. With mottos like “freedom of women is not negotiable” they have been marching in Berlin and other German cities selling their propaganda.
The text below was read during the press conference calling to the demo “Stoppt den Hass!! Stoppt die AfD” that will take place next Sunday 27.5.2018:
On Saturday the 27.05, Women in Exile and Friends, together with 100 other groups and initiatives are on the streets, on the water, in the air and everywhere to protest against the AfD and their racist propaganda and hatred against refugees.
We as asylum seeking women arrive and think we are safe to start a new life in this country. The reality of being accommodated in isolated camps, lack of perspectives and racist hostility from racist parties such as Afd policies determine our living conditions.

Every Day all of us have to struggle with all these kinds of fear and anxiety.
We are not only demonstrating against the AfD but also on the racism spread by media and carried out by the politics. Currently the Anker-centers, this role model of detention camps, planned by Seehofer is going hand in hand with the AfD ideas of excluding refugees from this society.
This lager system is a profit making business as usual; it benefits the capitalist system by using colonial methods to intimidate people. Recently AfD has started pretending to be fighting for women rights. With mottos like “freedom of women is not negotiable” they have been marching in Berlin and other German cities selling their propaganda.
Which women do they mean? Ain`t I A Woman?
We condemn the AfD and all other racists, nationalists and refugee hating groups!
WE SPEAK OUT against racism, oppression, right and racist violence!
Right to go, right to come and right to stay!
As always we say it loud and clear:
Speak up against racism, right and racist violence!
We from Women in Exile and Friends, want to continue with the topic of “”Women* Breaking Borders” this summer.
We want to visit with you in solidarity the cities in the south especially Bavaria and condemn Seeholfer now minister for Interior and Heimat, and during years responsible of creating more restrictive asylum laws and refugee camps. His “Anker” (Ankufts-und Rückführungszentren”/ Arrival and deportation centers ) role model system, will keep refugees totally isolated from independent German help and society: no legal counselling, no visits, no German course, no work, no school for children. This way it will be easier to deport them – without resistance, without security only full of despair.
Seeholfer wants to export this role model of detention camp idea German wide, it is bad enough with the ones existing in our areas without integrating the radical ideas from the AfD.
Our aim is and has always been to enable refugees who identifying themselves as women* to stand up for our rights as women* living in this society.
Last year were the 15 years of Women in Exile, 15 years building up a self-organization group fighting for refugee women’s rights and to empower them. To celebrate the anniversary WiE organized a Women* Breaking Border Conference. Between 300-400 women over all Germany attended, one of the biggest challenges was how to deal with the different languages, women were coming from many different countries and they needed to express themselves. Simultaneous interpretation to 8 languages was done thanks to Bla a collective that provides equipment and support for simultaneous interpretation in multilingual gatherings, they came with the knowledge and the infrastructure to make it possible and to Interprise!!! and the interpretors that supported us.
It was a success that the women could express themselves publicly in their own language. We kept in on mind.
This weekend we went a step forward and thanks to Bla collective we have learned how to build the technical devices needed for the simultaneous interpretation, the spiders!!!.
It is shocking to hear about the suicidal of a young mother and her child in a Lager in Eckolstädt, a village close to Jena in the state Thüringen. We feel sad and our sincere condolences goes to the husband, father, the whole family, eritrean community at large.
Reading about this case also makes us angry. For us it is clear that it isn’t an individual case but again the guilt of the lager and asylum system and the treatment of refugees in this country.
Before the woman and her family lived in a lager in Apolda, another city in Thüringen where they had good contact with the eritean community.
In the Lager they lived in fear of deportation as police came often to deport people to Italy.
They were looking for their own flat and after some time it is said they got a flat but in another lager in Eckolstädt. Here we wonder why they transfer from one lager to another and call it flat???
On the 12.05 during the We`llcome United Conference in Göttingen, Women in Exile and Friends joined other activists to demonstrate against the refugee lagers and high housing costs.
In Göttingen city, empty buildings belonging to the city council are being sold to private investors which is making the rental costs to rise in the city. A few weeks ago one of these houses was occupied by left wing activists that are fighting for better accommodation for refugees and especially the closure of the Lager Siekhöhe .
